Coming up: Next Farmers Markets - Saturday 26th May 10 am to 12.30 pm Creative Writing Workshop - Saturday 5th May, 9.30 to 1.00 pm Grand Eclectic Sale - Saturday 9th June, 10 am to 12 noon Glen Chorale Concert with strawberries and cream - Tuesday 12th June, 2.30 to 4.00 pm Latest news:Thanks to our friends from Freetricity Community Wise was chosen to receive 42 solar panels. The large, flat, open roof in sunny Eastbourne was considered an ideal site. During the Easter holidays these panels have been installed and await connection to the National Grid. Community Wise will generate clean, green electricity for its own use and all surplus will be fed in to the Grid. This is a huge boost to Community Wise as it means the roof space is being put to excellent use as well as every inch inside the building. There should be substantial savings to our electricity bills as well as benefits to the environment. Everyone wins.In 2012 Community Wise is planning to install two new toilets on the first floor, one of them accessible to wheelchair users, to upgrade the kitchen facilities and create room for storage on the upstairs landing. Funds are needed to complete this project. These necessry improvements will upgrade the upstairs facilities and make a huge difference to all our users, especially those who are disabled. Support us by giving a donation to Community Wise. Every little helps! In 2012 the Eastbourne Alzheimers Society will hold a monthly Saturday Coffee Morning from 10 am to 12 noon on the third Saturday of each month to enable members to keep in touch and to offer information and support. Why not visit the new cafe area in our foyer? Visitors and shop customers are welcome to enjoy a cup of good quality tea, coffee or chocolate for only 50p whenever Community Wise is open.
In partnership with the East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre a Hearing Aid Maintenance and Battery Service has started at Community Wise from 10 am to 12 noon on the first Monday of each month (or Tuesday if bank holiday). Next services on Monday 2nd April and Tuesday 1st May. Telephone 722505 for further information. Funding received towards energy conservation and reducing carbon footprintA grant from EDF Green Energy Fund enabled Community Wise to commission the Energy Centre for Sustainable Communities to undertake a Renewable Energy Options Appraisal. This appraisal has now been completed and Community Wise is seeking to implement the recommendations. These have been prioritised:Replace existing gas boiler with new energy efficient boiler. The existing boiler is 20 years old and had an efficiency of 60%. A new boiler with an efficiency of 90% was installed in autumn 09. Flat roof insulation was installed in summer 10. Cavity wall insulation within the exterior walls was installed in spring 10. 42 solar voltaic panels installed in Spring 12.
In September 09 our existing gas boiler was replaced with a new energy efficient boiler. An award for £4,700 from Veolia Environmental Trust Landfill Communities Fund has enabled Community Wise to install Cavity Wall Insulation and replace the remainder of our single glazed windows. In early May 2010 Communty Wise received the news that our application to E-on Sustainable Energy Fund had been successful. An award of £10,000 was made towards the insulation of the flat roof. With donations and fund-raising events to match fund, this work was completed during August 10. Community Wise explored the installation of solar voltaic panels and, in partnership with Freetricity, 42 panels were installed on the flat roof in April 2012. Monthly Farmers Markets On the last Saturday morning of each month local traders bring their produce and set up their stands on our forecourt and in our downstairs foyer and hall - locally produced bread, fruit and vegetables, home made pies, chutneys, locally produced meat, delicious cheeses and home-made cakes. Different local crafters display their wares each time and a fair trade stall is always in place. Refreshments are on sale. This market supports local enterprise and invests in our local economy. Live Better For Less Exhibition A Live Better for Less exhibition was arranged in partnership with English in the Community, Eastbourne Homes, Friends of Princes Park and Community Wise. This hugely successful free event was all about saving money and was held in November 08. Stands, demonstrations and workshops gave information and freebies on a wide variety of topics such as Visitors found out how to enjoy a happier healthier lifestyle while spending less money. See http://www.livebetterforless.org.uk/ for information about the Live Better for Less movement and future exhibitions.
